In 1900, only 14 percent of the world’s population lived in urban areas. In 2008, for the first time, the world’s population was evenly split between urban and rural areas; rural land ownership is becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of agri-businesses.
With our food supply becoming increasingly centralised, dependant for distribution on an oil supply that has passed its peak, cities are seeing a resurgence of interest in sustainability: locally sourced produce, allotments, farmers’ markets, alternative energy.
“Transition town” is a term that has been adopted by some councils but it is individuals and groups who are most engaged in sustainable activities.
Urban-Arcadia.com intends to provide a platform, forum and network for individuals and groups to promote related projects or ideas, from permaculture methods of food and biomass production to hi- and low-tech green technology such as landfill gas and heat-pumps, on any scale from domestic to National Grid level.
Sustainable living is of course not just about how we provide for ourselves, but the impact we have on our world, which in turn comes back to us. An example is waste, especially plastics.
